Load Balancing via BGP routes

Thu Sep 07, 2023 2:23 pm

Hi all,

I am using MikroTik v6.49.10 as a router for my Kubernetes cluster.

My cluster has three nodes, and I have BGP peering with all of them. This leads to three routes with same instance, scope, etc. MikroTik takes one of the routes and use it for routing traffic. I don't know exactly how it decides which route to prioritize.

Is there any possibility to do Load Balancing between these routes? For example, Round Robin or any other algorithm.

I would really appreciate any help.

Kind reagrds,
Branko

BGP best path selection criteria is explained here: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:B ... _Algorithm.

BGP ECMP is not supported in RouterOS.

Current RougerOS documentation has 11 steps but I don't know the significance. I suggest consult both keeping in mind wiki is deprecated.
Also keep in mind current documentation is a work in progress, and sometimes incomplete where the wiki says more.

I think the most precise information associated with ROSv6 is found on the wiki. The new documentation portal is targeting ROSv7.

@silence012 I defer to @clambert advice as better.

Thanks all for the answers.

Still, I don't know if it is possible to do load balancing between routes in this case. Is it possible, and if so, where can I find some documentation or example?

If it is something available only in RouterOS v7 that's still OK. I can upgrade my router :)
