Long Range WIFI for remoate Boat?

Sat Apr 27, 2024 9:15 am

We are currently developing an autonomous boat that can be controlled via Wi-Fi. We are searching for a Wi-Fi module that can cover a range between 1 km to 5 km.
  • The lake area has no obstacles that interfere with the ground station wifi and boat wifi signals.
  • Boat moving speed is 5km/hour
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for an available product, we would appreciate it.

We have found two Groove 52 modules that we can use. One is located on the ground station, and the other is on the boat. However, this setup has a limited range of only 250m.

We have reached out to a vendor for advice on our setup and they suggested using a 90-degree mANTbox ax15s on the ground station and an omiITK 5ac on the boat. However, we discovered that the omiITK 5ac only supports 5Ghz, which means that when we use the mANTbox ax15s 5Ghz, it only covers a 60-degree range. If anyone has experience with a similar setup, we would appreciate it if you could share the details with us. Your input would be very helpful.

I believe that in that kind of use the key parts of the setup are the antennas.

You need an omnidirectional one on the boat and a sector (like a 60°/90°/120°) on the ground, (but someone will need to rotate it to keep the boat within that angle?).

So I believe that using Netmetal/Basebox devices would allow you to experiment with different antennas.

You can however have more than one device or antenna on the ground, to cover a larger angle, surely 1-5 km seems to me very tough to reach, given the conditions, it is literally a "moving target" and there will be likely problems with interferences, maybe you are expecting too much from Mikrotik hardware, and you should look (if budget aloows this) at higher end devices.

You can also have multiple 120° antennas or devices on the boat, they should provide better signal than a single omni, see:
