hAP ax3 temperature at 58-60 degrees...

Thu Mar 28, 2024 12:54 pm

Greetings. Tell me, MikroTik hAP ax3, is the temperature at 58-60 degrees normal at work? CPU usage ranges from 5 to 35%. There are no special loads and rules. I am grateful in advance.

If such a temperature is the norm, then how can we explain the appearance of errors such as in the screenshot? I have some suggestions that the reboot is due to overheating of the processor, the frequency is once every 3-4 days... I am grateful in advance for your help.

I have some suggestions that the reboot is due to overheating of the processor, the frequency is once every 3-4 days...

The suggestion you are mentioning goes directly against the log line saying "out of memory condition was detected" ... which indicates a memory leak (and there are reports that on certain -ac devices this does happen).
I've never seen a case where CPU overheating would "invent" otherwise sensible error messages saying something different ...

This is probably true-memory overflow, and subsequent reboot in order to clear it (at the moment, the rest of the memory is 30-35 MB)

And to counter the other argument: CPU temperatures can easily reach 80-90C without any noticeable performance issues. Military grade components go even higher.

Not that you want to touch it at that temperature, that's something else ...

Can this be real? Hap ax3 has 1GB of RAM.

Why not ?
A limit is a limit, how far away it may appear to be.
I have a 16Gb laptop, with 1 wrong setting in a certain data-analysis tool, I can fill that within 5 minutes and the application crashes.
(my previous laptop had 24Gb, same problem could be seen there. Been there, done that)

An inspection of what the config of that device is, is the only solution here.

It turns out that it is possible, and most likely the manufacturer himself cannot say why this is happening. For the sake of experiment, I rebooted the router-650 MB of memory, after 3-4 days there will be 25-35 MB left, and so on, judging by the logs. The most interesting thing is that in hAPac for 6 years I didn't even know about such a problem, apparently v7 turned out to have a huge bunch of problems and glitches.

I have 1 AX3 at home, 5 with a customer.
NONE experience this behavior.

All are at least at 7.14 or 7.15beta.

Show the config or stop speculating.

Not to defend the manufacturer, but unless you post your current configuration (with personal/sensible data masked/removed) here on the forum for other members to review and/or open a ticket with official support, it seems to me unproved that the manufacturer, the hardware or software (as opposed to some possible mis-configuration of the device) can be pinpointed as having the responsibility for your issue.

The Ax3 is a common enough device, and has more than enough memory (1 GB) to deal with most setups.

While there is always the possibility of a hardware issue on your specific device or software issue in connection with your specific (even if apparently perfectly correct) configuration, there is no way to know the actual cause without some more data.

That latest versions of 7 have a number of issues, particularly with low memory devices, is no secret, but given the amount of Ax3's out there there would be tens or hundreds of similar reports if the issue is caused by some "structural" defect in RoS 7 or in the Ros 7 applied to an Ax3 device.

In the past (regardless if with running version 6 or 7) there have been similar reports of "memory leaks" and most of them were connected with particularly complex configuration.

It is entirely possible that a recent 7.13+ version has a few (actually many more than a few) corners that need to be rounded, so if you are running one of those you can try using an older, more tested version *like* 7.12.1, if you don't need any of the new features introduced in later versions and see if the issue persists.

I can understand your frustration and the urge to rant about it, but it seems to me that it won't make you in any way nearer to (hopefully) finding a solution or workaround.

How big does that dynamic address list get after 1 day, 2 days, 3 days ?
If it only keeps growing, you can hit a memory limit ...

In 6 hours after the reboot, the memory decreased by 400MB.
Are we talking about /firewall address lists? if so, how do I limit its size?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

How to limit the address list ?
Don't use it ... simple, no ?

The way I see it (provided unlimited memory space), you are going to end up with every address on the internet if you never clean up that address list.

Why do you want to list those trying to get in ?
Simply drop them in raw rule (MUCH faster) and done.

What's the use of listing those IPs ?
What else are you going to do with it ?

Besides, processing that list on itself also takes away resources from your device.
Like memory ... but also CPU.

Turn it around.
ONLY allow what should be allowed. DROP ALL ELSE.

(hmmm ... sounds like a solid firewall concept too  )

It's a good idea, I don't know how to implement it yet, but I understood the direction-not to filter and block everything in a row, but to accept only what is necessary, and cut off the rest.

Default firewall fiter rule set folliws the "allow needed, drop the rest" concept, although the last rule in chain=forward is formulated in a bit cryptical way. Too bad that some people eradicate the default firewall setup only to replace it with a pile of garbage. Instead of adjusting default if needed.

And then blame CPU temperature when things go haywire ...
