Search for new mikrotik router

Fri Oct 13, 2023 1:01 pm

Dear Sir/Madam

I search for my new mikrotik router, now I have mikrotik hAP ac² , but I must change this router - not many LAN port, and new ISP is via optical fiber not via RJ-45 .

My requirements:
- Wi-Fi [2,4GHz and 5GHz] (version 5 or wonderfully 6)
- minimum 7 LAN port ( wonderfully 10Gbps, but one port in example 2,5Gb/s is good too )
- 1 SFP+ port
- passive cooling
- suggested price to 250$

I use this for wireguard connection then I would to be speed via wireguard ( I know, it also depends on the ISP ), and have good Wi-Fi

I see this: RB5009UG+S+IN but this haven`'t Wi-Fi.

What do you recommend?

For only 250$ i really think that you will not find what you want.

What I would do is buy RB5009 but maybe PoE version, so you have really future proof router and use ac2 as AP until you decide to buy another AP.

RB4011 series - amazingly powerful routers
The 4011 is a bit of a dead end. Cannot support BOTH 2.4/5 GHz WiFi AND new WiFi driver. Not recommended for new purchase.

But router RB5009UG+S+IN + hap ac2 with wifi and PoE is not a bad idea. Thank you for this idea

It depends what area you want to cover with wifi, its not the same small apartment and large house.

For my house i have combo RB5009 and 2 cAP ax and it works great for me.

For eg. two cap ax would cost you another 250$

Of course you can look at another APs, you have tp link, ubiquiti.

At the end you must put to the paper what do you expect from wifi. Only mobile phones watching youtube or do you maybe need high speed wireless connection for your work laptop etc...

Speed via WiFi from hap ac2 it's very decent, I don't need anymore from wifi.
This is very small home (60m2) . Than I use for start this RB 5009 + hap ac2 as Access Point, and if I need more from Wi-Fi after time then I will buy cAP ax ;)

Very thank you for this helpful ideas.

For that small home and if your ac2 had good signal then maybe you should look at ax3 maybe

It depends on the internal structure of your small home. I have a similar small appartment but straight through the middle there is a concrete wall (part of the structure of the building), while all other walls are plasterboard.
I do require two WiFi devices for reasonable coverage. Otherwise the signal is very weak in the other half.

I think you should really consider an Omada for great WiFi, but I would say there is no need for a >600$ one like the AXE11000. Omada EAP670 is only AX5400, but that is more than sufficient for a home setup and costs around 150$. It has 2.5G PoE LAN. You can save some bucks with a EAP610 for AX1800, which still is AX and still quite good.
I am not sure though, if PoE will work with the rb5009.

I am sad to say this, but I am having a lot of problems with my CAP AC setup in my VERY noisy environment (>100 SSIDs seen).
The Wifiwave2 (cap ax) is better, but I want ceiling mounted, and those Omadas look like the better choice. For sure less fuss, than with MT WLAN...

I am also using an rb5009 which is however, great and I think it´s compactness, performance and versatility make it a great choice.

Agree, for eg. in my parents apartment I installed ax2, size is about 55m2 and they are happy with WiFi, even IPTV is connected to the WiFi and there isn't any problem.

In my house ax3 is right above living room in our bedroom and while testing I was able to connect to 2.4GHz and have decent speed. 70-90 Mbps, and my connection is about 170 Mbps. Floor is from reinforced concrete.
